Then he moves in closer to me. His lush mouth opens to say something, his thumb still moving again and again over my hand.
“Do you think I could make you come just by doing this?”
“You know the question you asked me that first night we met?”
He begins to caress my hand again with his thumb and nods, silently replying to my question.
Before I say it, I take a deep breath. It comes out in a murmur.
“My answer would’ve been yes, Davison.”
His head snaps up, his beautiful emerald eyes shining, his mouth gaping at me.
I walk to my door and don’t look back.
Chapters 1-3
Allegra Orsini, 24, an aspiring opera singer, is working her shifts as the coat check girl at Le Bistro, a popular restaurant across the street from Lincoln Center in Manhattan. She encounters Ashton Canterbury, the girlfriend of Davison Berkeley, a well-known billionaire and CEO of his family’s company in Manhattan. Ashton treats Allegra very rudely. Then she meets Davison (age 31) himself when he comes to retrieve a lost glove from her. There is an instant attraction between them.
Allegra’s father is introduced. He is a butcher in Little Italy, and Allegra lives with him while she is studying voice in grad school at the Gotham Conservatory. A few nights later, Davison returns to the restaurant with Ashton and another couple. Ashton acts rudely toward Allegra again, and he admonishes her for it.
At the conservatory, Allegra and her best friend, Luciana (Lucy) Gibbons, are in class when their professor, Signora Pavoni, informs them that an anonymous donor has paid for a private backstage tour of the Metropolitan Opera House for them. After the tour, Davison is waiting for her outside next to his car, a sleek Maybach. He drives Allegra home despite her initial resistance. He tells her he broke up with Ashton because of her, which freaks out Allegra. She knows she can’t be with him because of a secret from her past.
As a gifted opera singer, Allegra Orsini's only obsession is music-until she meets him. A strikingly handsome and powerful man with a life splashed across the tabloids, Davison Cabot Berkeley isn't what she expected. He's unlike the other wealthy patrons who dine at Le Bistro.
