Forever
To have and to
hold from this day forward
Wedding bells are
ringing in the charming town of Christmas, but not for Vivian Westfield. She's
just had her heart trampled under the cowboy boots of Chance McBride and lost
her dream job at a big-city newspaper. But when she returns for a wedding, she
stumbles on a story that could resurrect her career. First, though, she'll have
to deal with the handsome man standing in her way . . . and a still-burning
flame that's too hot to ignore.
Chance recognizes
trouble when he sees it. He just didn't expect to find it in the first-class
cabin on the flight home for his father's wedding. Yet there she is, as
gorgeous as ever. Vivi dared Chance to want things he knew he could never have.
It's why he left her. But Christmas's meddling matchmakers have them firmly in
their sights. So if they want to survive the next week, they'll have to play
the part of an adoring couple-an irresistible charade that may give them a
second chance at the real thing . . .
Vivi walked down the
aisle, stopping in front of the crew. “I have a question for you. Did the
problem you had earlier with the cargo door have anything to do with the
turbulence we experienced?”
“No, ma’am. It—” the pilot
started to explain.
“Really? Because that was one of the roughest
flights I’ve ever been on. A lot of the passengers were complaining, you know.
How long have you been flying for—”
Chance placed his hand at
the small of her back. “Thanks, folks.” He gave the crew an apologetic smile
and Vivi a gentle shove out the door.
“Hey, what do you think you’re doing? I
wasn’t finished—”
“I was saving you from yourself. You’ll end up
on a watch list if you’re not careful. Come on, we don’t want to keep my dad
waiting. Did you check any luggage?”
“They can’t put you on a
watch list for questioning the crew,” she muttered, head bent as she worked her
phone.
“Luggage, Slick, you got
any?” Still busy on her phone, she nodded and nearly walked into a man with a
cane.
Chance took her arm, guiding her to the
airport shuttle. “You’re a dangerous woman,” he said as he retrieved his phone
and texted his dad to meet them at baggage claim.
“No, that would be your
aunt. I have five messages from her.”
He sighed; so did he. “What did she say?”
She glanced at him as they
stepped into the packed shuttle. “She’s setting me up with every eligible man
in Christmas. And just so you know, you’re not one of them.”
He frowned and opened his
messages from Nell. “What’s she up to now? She did the same to me.”
Vivi leaned into him, reading his e-mail. “Brandi.
She’s the waitress at the Penalty Box, isn’t she?”
“I’m not dating Brandi. We
have a plan, remember?” He snagged her phone. “Who’s Dr. McSexy?”
“I don’t know.” She tugged
her cell from his hand as they got off the shuttle and headed for the
escalators. “But what I do know is we don’t have to go through with the plan
now. She’s not trying to set us up.”
“Yeah right. The two of us
being on the same flight was no coincidence. Pretending that we’re together is
the only thing that will stop whatever she’s up to now. Unless you’re
interested in dating Dr. McSexy? I wouldn’t want to put a crimp in your love
life.”
“Of course I’m not interested. I’m not
interested in dating anyone.”
The muscles in his
shoulders loosened at her response. Okay, that reaction had nothing to do with
her not wanting to date, he assured himself. His relief was because he needed
her to go along with the plan for his sake. “Good. We’re on the same page. You
tell Nell we’re involved, and I’ll do the same.”
She gave her head a
slight, worrisome shake. “The more I think about it, the less I like the idea.
We’ll get everyone’s—”
Before he had an
opportunity to address whatever excuses she’d come up with, he heard his father
call his name. He looked up to see his dad making his way toward them with a
relieved smile on his face. A twinge of guilt knotted Chance’s gut. He’d
disappointed his dad a lot over the last five years. The smile Chance offered
in response faltered when he spotted the woman following behind his father.
Vivi touched his arm. “Are
you all right?”
At least that’s what he
thought she said. He couldn’t be sure with the sound of his heart pounding in
his ears.
His father pulled him in
for a hug. “It’s good to see you, son. Welcome home.”
Chance managed to return
his father’s greeting, then forced himself to look at the sun-streaked blonde hanging back with a
nervous smile on her heart-shaped face.
Natalee. Kate’s baby sister. Jesus.
Great small town romance with lots of nosy folks who like to meddle in Chase and Vivi's relationship. There's a little bit of everything in this story to keep you entertained from start to finish. Humor, love, heartbreak, mystery, grief, guilt and passion. This is the first book in the series that I read, and while it can be read as a standalone, I want to go back and read the previous books. Fans of Robyn Carr and Susan Mallory will enjoy it.
