My entire life is a lie.
He launched my salty reputation.
Yet, here I am, doing him another favor so he can get what he wants—maybe then I can dislodge him from my heart.
There is an emptiness in my life.
Yet I have everything I need, or at least, I thought I did.
It was supposed to be a simple deal between friends. Friends? Yeah, right. I should have known we’re too volatile for that.

Tyler
See me in my office as soon as you get back from lunch.
Not exactly the note I wanted from my boss after a very delicious lunch with Abby. I’m not even mad that we didn’t end up eating. That’s been the norm since we’ve been back these past couple of weeks.
Colorado was beautiful, and I think Abby liked it just as much as I did. I bet she’d go with me if I asked her. I mean, we haven’t exactly spent much time apart lately. Moving away from her would suck.
I knock on the frame of his door and wait for him to look up. His work phone is up to his ear; he waves me in.
He isn’t smiling.
He always smiles when he sees me.
He also never emails me to come to his office as soon as I can.
This doesn’t feel good. Something isn’t right.
“Yes, thank you. I’ll have more information for you later today. Yes. All right. Good-bye.” Marshall sets the receiver down and sighs.
Oh no.
Did a client complain? Did the offer I made last week fall through?
He looks up, and I sit up straight.
Shit.
“Listen, Tyler. The reason I called you in here …” His voice is firm but wavers at the same time. Almost as if he isn’t sure about what he wants to say. “My son, he’s been making horrible choices for the past few years, and it’s taken a toll on our family.”
He pauses but keeps his focus on me. I want to cringe; this just got really weird really fast and I’m not sure what he wants me to do or say.
“Our family …” he goes on, this time rising from his desk to move around the room. I stay seated. “… has suffered in ways I can’t even describe to you and in ways I’d never want you experience. The reputation it’s given us, the countless therapy meetings and interventions we went through to get him to where he is today … it’s not fun.”
I imagine not. Why he is telling me all this?
“I don’t like to share this depth of personal information with an employee, but because this certain … situation … applies to you, I decided this was best.”
All right, wait. What?
“How exactly does this apply to me?” I ask, spinning my chair to face him as he stands near his bookshelf.
“You don’t know?” he asks.
I shake my head. “I do not.”
He sighs heavily and returns to his seat. He then begins to shake his head. “This is exactly how it started.”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Jinks, but I need you to be more specific, because I’m pretty lost.”
“Tyler, my son has relapsed and I’m afraid that the person who supplied him the drugs was your fiancée.”
What the hell?
What is he talking about?
“That’s not possible,” I say.
“It’s possible. My son hid this side of his life from everyone for a long time. I imagine your fiancée is doing the same.”
“Abby doesn’t sell drugs,” I say without hesitation. “You have the wrong person.”
“Tyler,” Mr. Jinks starts, but I stand and cut him off.
