So this was totally different than other hockey romances because the heroine is also a kick-ass hockey player. I understand why she was bitter about her hockey career ending, but it did get annoying at times. I loved that Dylan needed Samantha's help to improve his game, and that he respected her enough to actually listen to her suggestions. Their attraction to each other is instant and they burn up the sheets, desk and - well you get the picture. I loved Dylan for being so patient with Samantha and giving her the freedom to do what she thought she needed to do, even though it's not what he wanted. The guys on the team were great - looking forward to seeing them meet their perfect match in the next books.

Spin-off Series: The Good, Bad and Ugly
As most of you probably
know, the Power Play series is a spin-off from my Wicked Play series. The
characters in Power Play first appeared in Bonds
of Courage, book six of Wicked Play. The Glaciers professional hockey team
was first mentioned in Bonds of Need,
book two of Wicked Play along with Holden Hauke, the hockey star and hero in
book six. Scott Walters, the upcoming hero in Back in Play, book two of Power Play, was also mentioned in Bonds of Denial, book 5 of Wicked Play.
Are you confused yet?
Keeping the stories and characters straight is just one of the ugly parts of
creating a spin-off series. I started planning the Power Play series two years
ago when I first referenced the Glaciers. Building up the team and characters
was always a subset of the current Wicked Play stories I was writing, but I was
always careful to never let it overtake the current story.
Spin-off series can have a
benefit of bringing current readers into your new series, but it can also turn
off new readers who haven’t read the other series. It’s a delicate balance to
carry over characters and keep them consistent without losing or annoying any
of your readers—old or new. Some people love spin-off series and other hate
them. It’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll never make everyone happy no
matter what you do.
For me, writing a spin-off
series was really about writing books about hockey players. I saw an
opportunity to weave the team into the series I was currently writing and made
sure to leave the option open. At the time, I honestly had no clue if I’d get
to write my sports romances or if anyone would want to publish them. Luck was
with me though, and I did get to write my hockey stories.
Do you like to read
spin-off series? What about them do you like or dislike? I personally like them
if it’s from a series I really enjoyed. I love seeing the world continue in a
new way. Maybe that’s why I decided to write one. It’s been fun keeping parts
of the Wicked Play series alive while creating a tangent world next to it.
