“Quinn Darnell Rosolado Rolandis, where have you been?”  His grandmother Ina asked with a heavy Spanish accent, “I’ve been keeping my good food warm for you.” A deep frown creased across her soft brown face.

“I’m sorry I’m late. I just got into town, mi abuela,” Quinn smiled gently leaning in to kiss her on the cheek.

His grandmother didn’t smile, “You lie Quinn!” She exclaimed with a tilt of her head. “Grandma knows. My friend, she saw your car. Stay away from that woman’s house!”

She gave him a blank stare.

“Everything under the sun that God made needs love grandmother,” He said slowly bowing his head.

She gave him no response.

Ina Rosolado stood up straight and silent. She held her head proud, high and steady as she stared back at her grandson. Her jaw tightened. Her eyes were determined and she didn’t utter a word.

The silence was daunting as she continued to stare.

Quinn finally sighed exasperated. He knew trying to out-stare his grandmother was hopeless. She had perfected the art of looking through him and seeing the truth.

“Fine…..I will grandmother,” he lied and prayed she couldn’t see the truth. “Can we please eat now?”  Quinn solemnly asked.

After a few seconds Ina Rosolado slowly held up her hand gracefully directing her grandson’s entry into her home. “You know where the dining room is my Mayan Superman, let’s eat.  I made you a chocolate cake,” she said gently and softly as her eyes brightened, twinkling back at him.

Quinn walked in and kept his head hung low. He softly murmured, “Tú eres mi angel…. Grandmother you will always be my angel.”
